The surveys of the North American Trumpeter swan populations began in 1968. This survey was repeated in 1974-1975. Since 1980, the survey has been conducted at 5 year intervals. Survey coverage was expanded in 1985 and have continued to change as population restoration efforts have resulted in expanding swan distributions in North America. The 2005 survey efforts were not directed to include captive swans (such as reintroduction cygnets) as a part of the numbers.
The target survey period was late summer, but some regions counted later than the target time period to allow swans to congregate from their wider breeding areas within a particular region.
The survey covers the North American continent as a whole. North America is divided into three sections, with reporting data coming from several positions within each of these three primary reporting ranges.
The three sections are:
The map below shows the boundry areas for three swan populations documented in this survey.
Grey areas on map indicate previously known Trumpeter swan populations.
Red areas on map indicate new or expanded Trumpeter swan populations since the 2000 survey.
