Wing span: 1 3/8 - 2 1/8 inches (3.5 - 5.4 cm).
Caterpillar hosts: Violets including Viola glabella and V. nephrophylla.
Eggs are laid singly near host plants. Caterpillars feed on leaves; third-stage caterpillars hibernate.
Habitat: Wet meadows, bogs, marshes.

This picture was taken on a very windy day. I saw 3 of these guys perched on very low berry bushes (not sure what kind of berry plant this is) and all were within 50 feet of each other. None of them flushed from their perches even when I came very close and re-aligned the camera several times.
