Wing span: 1 1/4 - 1 7/8 inches (3.2 - 4.8 cm).

Caterpillar hosts: Knotweeds (Polygonum) and docks (Rumex) in the buckwheat family (Polygonaceae).

Eggs are laid singly on plants. Eggs hibernate until spring; caterpillars eat leaves. The larva is yellowish green with a dark stripe down the back.

Two overlapping broods per season is common.

Habitat: Low, wet areas such as bogs, marshes, wet meadows, ponds.
