The Wildflowers and Plants of Crex Meadows

The Crex Meadows Wildlife Management Area hosts a wide variety of plants and wildflowers. Recent documentation efforts have revealed over 200 types of true prairire plant within a vascular plant area index of over 600 plants.

Flower identification is a pretty new-for-me topic. It is possible that I may miss on an ID, or list it as a tentative ID, or ask if someone knows what a particular flower is.

Wetland Indicator Status

Crex Meadows is located in Region 3 and the data displayed on Crex Meadows Plant pages reflects the Regional determination regarding the Wetland Indicator status.

Regional Indicators express the estimated probability (likelihood) of a species occurring in wetlands versus non-wetlands in the region. An asterisk (*) following a regional Indicator identifies tentative assignments based on limited information from which to determine the indicator status. The wetland indicator categories should not be equated to degrees of wetness. Many obligate wetland species occur in permanently or semi-permanently flooded wetlands, but a number of obligates also occur in and some are restricted to wetlands which are only temporarily or seasonally flooded.

Indicator categories

Indicator Code Wetland Type Comment
OBL Obligate Wetland Occurs almost always (estimated probability 99%) under natural conditions in wetlands.
FACW Facultative Wetland Usually occurs in wetlands (estimated probability 67%-99%), but occasionally found in non-wetlands.
FAC Facultative Equally likely to occur in wetlands or non-wetlands (estimated probability 34%-66%).
FACU Facultative Upland Usually occurs in non-wetlands (estimated probability 67%-99%), but occasionally found on wetlands (estimated probability 1%-33%).
UPL Obligate Upland Occurs in wetlands in another region, but occurs almost always (estimated probability 99%) under natural conditions in non-wetlands in the regions specified. If a species does not occur in wetlands in any region, it is not on the National List.
NA No agreement The regional panel was not able to reach a unanimous decision on this species.
NI No indicator Insufficient information was available to determine an indicator status.
NO No occurrence The species does not occur in that region.

The above Wetland Indicator Status information comes from the USDA Plants Database.

Species of Concern

Many plants listed within my Crex Meadows pages are not listed as special concern, threatened, or endangered in Wisconsin. This may not hold true for other areas of the country. I would suggest if a plant found within the Crex Meadows pages is not listed as one of these special concern plants for this particular area, you may want to check the status of these plants within other boundries.

An example would be the Canada Mayflower. While not listed as a species of concern in Wisconsin, the state of Kentucky lists this plant as Threatened and the state of New Jersey lists one of the Canada Mayflower variants as Endangered at the USDA Plants Database, linked on the left side under External Links.
